Ask Dr John: How do I know I need a breast reduction?

There are several reasons why you would need a breast reduction.

Health reasons:
  1. If it is putting a lot of weight on your spine, or pressure on your neck or shoulders. This pressure can lead to a lot of upper-body pain and poor posture – which you may even need physical therapy to repair
  2. If they’re causing chronic rash or skin irritation under the breasts. Due to skin rubbing against more skin, they could begin causing discomfort – from itchiness to rashes or infections
  3. If you’re experiencing tingling or pain in the nerves – breasts that are large enough can put strain on the torso and neck, causing nerve compression
Aesthetic reasons:
  1. If they’re asymmetrical or droopy (and could benefit from revision surgery or a lift)
  2. Because of the weight or the size, can put limitations on physical activity, sport, or exercise

There are many other reasons not mentioned as to why you may have to undergo a breast reduction. If you’re concerned about the size of your breasts, why not reach out?
